I am a long-time education worker, a workplace and community organiser and dad. I have just moved to Brisbane after living in Cairns for 18 years.

I was president of the National Tertiary Education Union at James Cook University in northern Queensland for a decade before moving. I also worked from 2019 to 2024 with Rural Australians for Refugees as national secretary, president and vice-president.

Australia is a wealthy country but so many people can’t even afford to rent or buy a home.

Prices increase and poverty worsens yet corporations go unchecked. They make windfall profits, create inflation and economic havoc and are accountable to no one.

While services are being cut to pay for massive military spending and tax cuts for the rich, the basics like food, utilities, education and health are slipping from the grasp of many.

And we are facing runaway climate change yet still dependent on fossil fuels.
