The 10th national conference of Socialist Alliance is taking place at a time extreme inequality, intensified conflict and ecological crisis on a global scale. The 85 richest individuals in the world now hold as much wealth between them as the 3.5 billion poorest people in the world.

This is a speech given by Socialist Alliance member Dave Holmes on September 12, at Melbourne rally protesting regime's attacks on Kurdish communities across Turkey. The event was organised by the Kurdish Association of Victoria.

The Socialist Alliance declared its solidarity and support for Kurdish HDP (Peoples Democratic Party) MP Leyla Guven and other political prisoners in Turkey on indefinite hunger strike for the release of Kurdish liberation leader Abdullah Ocalan.

On the one hand there is a highly militarised state, with one of the best equipped armed forces in the world, generously subsidised by billions of dollars in Western military and non-military aid. On the other hand there are 1½ million people, subjects of this state, which has herded them into a walled ghetto on which it imposes a starvation siege.

This updated resolution was adopted by the Socialist Alliance National Council on October 4.

The Socialist Alliance condemns the air, land and artillery attack by the Turkish military and other terrorist forces on Afrin, a canton in the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (Rojava).

The US, Australia and other partners-in-crime in the war on Iraq must not be allowed to use the latest developments in that country to increase their military intervention in the region.

Estimates suggest about 1000 civilians have been killed since pro-Assad forces launched their offensive to take East Aleppo on November 25, with three-quarters of these deaths at the hands of pro-Assad forces. Since 2011, almost 500,000 Syrians have been killed.
