The 10th national conference of Socialist Alliance is taking place at a time extreme inequality, intensified conflict and ecological crisis on a global scale. The 85 richest individuals in the world now hold as much wealth between them as the 3.5 billion poorest people in the world.

This is a speech given by Socialist Alliance member Dave Holmes on September 12, at Melbourne rally protesting regime's attacks on Kurdish communities across Turkey. The event was organised by the Kurdish Association of Victoria.

The Socialist Alliance declared its solidarity and support for Kurdish HDP (Peoples Democratic Party) MP Leyla Guven and other political prisoners in Turkey on indefinite hunger strike for the release of Kurdish liberation leader Abdullah Ocalan.

On the one hand there is a highly militarised state, with one of the best equipped armed forces in the world, generously subsidised by billions of dollars in Western military and non-military aid. On the other hand there are 1½ million people, subjects of this state, which has herded them into a walled ghetto on which it imposes a starvation siege.

This updated resolution was adopted by the Socialist Alliance National Council on October 4.
