The turnout and energy at the March in May rallies on May 18 proved that people are not going to take this budget lying down.

And so it begins — an offensive, on behalf of the Australian ruling class and corporate interests, to steal the future from the majority of Australians, to dismantle what remains of our social welfare system, in order to carry out, in the words of Treasurer Joe Hockey, "the government's solemn duty ... to build a stronger Australia".

The Socialist Alliance condemns the threatened US-led Western military assault on Syria. We call on the Australian government to reject this latest imperial aggression, to extract itself from its military alliance with the US and end its involvement in all aggressive multinational military operations.

The Socialist Alliance demands that the Sri Lankan government stops the bombing, shelling and all military operations against the Tamil minority, and starts political negotiations based on the right to self-determination of the Tamils. We also demand the Australian government:

  • The abolition of debts to Australia incurred by poor nations in the South Pacific and south-east Asia;

  • The extension of aid programs, under the democratic control of local communities;

  • An extension of Australian citizenship to Pacific islanders displaced by global warming;

  • The withdrawal of Australian troops and police from countries in the region;

The struggle for profit leads inevitably to war. For this reason opposition to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the proxy wars being waged by imperialist powers around the world, are closely interconnected with the fight for global social and economy justice.

Socialist Alliance supports and campaigns for:

  • An end to all aggressive military alliances, such as that with the US;
  • The removal of all US military facilities and troops from Australia; and
  • An end US navy visits to Australian ports.
