Number 7

On behalf of the Socialist Alliance (and the Democratic Socialist Perspective), I attended “Socialism 2009”, a conference of the Malaysian Socialist Party (PSM), on November 14 and 15, 2009.

Brief background on PSM

The PSM was formed on May Day 1998, from plantation workers and anti-evictions activists. In some ways similarly to the Socialist Alliance, it is a relatively young party, although its tradition goes back far beyond its 11 years of existence.

Dear comrades,

On behalf of the Socialist Alliance, we would like to send warm, socialist greetings to the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, thanking you once again for the invitation to participate in the International Meeting of Left Parties held in Caracas, November 19-21, 2009.

The outcomes of this event are already having an important impact on the world, particularly among left and progressive forces, and we a grateful that we could be part of it and contribute to its success in our own modest way.

Below are a list of proposed amendments to the constitution put forward by the Socialist Alliance National Executive. The rationales that introduce each section were written by Peter Boyle who convened a Constitution Working Group (of Bea Bleile, David White, Greg Rowell, Dick Nichols, Dave Riley and Peter Boyle) that prepared the amendments for the National Executive's consideration.

Special decision of the international meeting of left parties

Caracas, November 19-21, 2009

The following proposals were drafted by the transition working group (David White, Dave Holmes, Neville Spencer, Chris Williams and Peter Boyle) and were adopted by the SA NE on December 10.

This resolution was adopted at the December 10 National Executive meeting, with one abstention.

It has been noticeable for some years now that the pattern of commitment that people make to the socialist cause has changed.

Some people have pointed to the changes in the welfare system or in student’s support payments as parts of the reasons for this.

It can be frustrating, when we know that there are big issues facing humanity and yet it is hard to break through the façade of ordinary life to bring people into a commitment to action to improve their lives.
