Socialist Alliance National Council, October 6-7, 2012

Urgent appeal. Socialist Alliance needs to submit an updated list of over 1500 members to the Australian Electoral Commission to maintain our electoral registration and appear on the ballot at the next federal election. We're asking all existing members and those interested in joining to confirm your willingness to support our electoral enrolment by filling in this form.

Amendments to the Socialist Alliance Perspectives document

Motion 1: In the section on Left Unity

To add the following sentence to the end of Paragraph 29:

“The Socialist Alliance sees no contradiction between seeking broader left unity on the one hand, and the need to continue to win new members to our party.”

Motion 1: Amendment to the GLW section of the National Membership, GLW Distribution and subscriptions report proposal around the Blitz:

To replace the existing motion with the following:

“Organise a 2-week sales Blitz in the last week of October and first week of November (or as otherwise arranged). To talk with the Resistance leadership about co-organising this push.”

Motion 2: Amendment to the SA Membership section of the National Membership, GLW Distribution and subscriptions report :

To replace the existing motion with the following:

Each branch to elect a membership secretary and/or membership team as part of the co-ordinating division of labour.

Resolutions

Motion 1: That we adopt the document Draft Perspectives Resolution (as amended) for the 9th national conference of the Socialist Alliance, and that this be circulated to branches in preparation for pre-conference discussion.

Motion 2: That we adopt the campus and youth work resolutions as presented:

  • SA seeks to collaborate with Resistance on interventions into student conferences in 2013.
  • SA branches initiate discussions with Resistance by the end of the year about strengthening our presence on campuses and structures for integrating, educating and developing youth.
  • Improve co-ordination of GLW coverage of education-related material, communication and propaganda resources, including a series of analytical articles and position statements.
  • SA collaborates with Resistance to develop an O-week resource kit and investigate the possibility of a post O-Week national tour.
  • SA encourages Resistance to develop Federal election campaign ideas for education and youth policy and campaigning strategies for engaging youth.

Motion 3: That we adopt the proposals outlined in the Report on national finances 2012:

  • That the NC:
    • Encourages all branches to prioritise GLW fundraising between now and the end of the year to reach branch targets;
    • Sets $4100 as the target for our total pledge base to Activist Centres around the country;
    • Aims to increase the number of pledgers to the GLW Fighting Fund 2013 (target to be based on total of branch targets);
    • Aims to work with branches to reduce branch subsidies to zero in 2013.
    • Set the 2013 GLW Fighting Fund target at $250,000
    • Encourages all branch leadership teams to schedule a discussion ASAP to discuss the above proposals.

Motion 4: That we adopt the proposals outlined in the National Membership, GLW distribution and subscriptions report.

  • Each branch to elect a membership secretary and/or membership team as part of the co-ordinating division of labour.
  • Make a push to renew the expirees (which would bring us to ~ 800) by the January 2013 conference.
  • Continue to offer free Socialist Alliance membership to Resistance joiners.
  • Continue to produce weekly E-newsletter.  Encourage regular reports from working groups and profiling our campaign and campus building work.
  • Use the E-newsletter to profile successful sales and subscriptions experiences.
  • Organise a 2-week sales Blitz in the last week of October and first week of November (or as otherwise arranged). To talk with the Resistance leadership about co-organising this push.
  • Branches to decide on targets for sales, sellers and hours.
  • Focus on getting higher participation, along with the experienced members putting in extra hours.
  • Push on selling gift subscriptions in the lead-up to November-December.
  • Push on getting members to subscribe as part of the GLW blitz and raise the national subs data base to 900.

Motion 5: That we adopted the proposals outlined in the NC Report on Publications and Education

  • To hold a Marxism School in Brisbane in the December period as many people have/can get this time off work and other commitments.
  • Branches are encouraged to organise ITS and/or ITM classes after HS/Uni/TAFE exams are over, and to consider who would benefit from attending the party school in December, and whether there would be interest in attending another Marxism school in the first quarter of 2013 (venue to be decided after feedback from branches).

Motion 6: That the next national conference of the Socialist Alliance (following the 2013 conference) be held on the June long weekend in 2014.

Motion 7: That Branches continue to organise discussions around the document Towards a Socialist Australia, and that this draft be presented to the  2013 National Conference for adoption.

Motion 8: That Branches work towards establishing and/or strengthening their coordinating committees by early 2013, with the aim that these bodies be elected by the branch, meet on a regular basis, support the Branch convenor in their role and coordinate the work of the branch.
