Motion of solidarity with the election campaign of Baba Jan (Pakistan) adopted by the 11th National Conference of Socialist Alliance

The 11th National Conference notes the impressive mobilisations in Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan in support of the candidacy of Baba Jan, representing the Awami Workers Party, for the constituency of Hunza 6 in the Gilgit-Baltistan legislative elections. Baba Jan has been a political prisoner since 2010, framed by anti-terror courts and sentenced to life imprisonment for leading mobilisations against the lack of compensation for victims of flooding, and against police killings. His election campaign from jail has become a rallying point for mass grassroots activism. Candidates from the capitalist parties have attempted to bribe him from withdrawing his candidacy.

Socialist Alliance calls for the immediate release of Baba Jan, and the release of other political prisoners held by the Pakistani state.

Socialist Alliance congratulates the Awami Workers Party and Baba Jan for an inspiring campaign.
