Motion of solidarity to Barcelona Together (Barcelona Em Comu) adopted by the 11th National Conference of Socialist Alliance

Dear Friends, Comrades, Sisters and Brothers;

On behalf of the Socialist Alliance in Australia please accept our sincere congratulations and best wishes to everyone involved in the Barcelona Em Comu campaign. News of your inspiring success has spread around the world. In Barcelona we've found hope for our common struggle for human dignity, real democracy and a safe and sustainable future.

For the moment Australia has escaped the worst of the economic crisis such as you are experiencing in much of Europe. However we are still a country characterised by growing inequality, social exclusion, a housing affordability crisis, racist attempts by state and federal governments to close down Aboriginal communities and the racist scapegoating of migrants and refugees. We know that these problems will become worse if and when we also experience an economic recession. For this reason we will be looking closely at your experiences and seeking to learn what we can.

We know that you face many challenges in order to create the better future that the people of Barcelona deserve. We know that there are obstacles in the form of your regional government, the national government in Madrid, the Troika and all those other forces that defend the multi-national companies and super rich who profit rather than suffer because of the crisis.

However we are hopeful that the people of Barcelona will be successful in setting a different course. By committing ourselves to our own struggle for a better future we hope to make a small contribution to your success also. Thank you again for your inspiration.

In solidarity,
Sue Bolton (Councillor, City of Moreland, Victoria, Australia)
Sam Wainwright (Councillor, City of Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia)
And delegates of the Socialist Alliance 11th National Conference, Sydney June 6, 2015.
